Assessment of the cortical bone thickness using ultrasonic guided waves: Modelling and in vitro study

Determination of cortical bone thickness is warranted, e.g., for assessing the level of endosteal resorption in osteoporosis or other bone pathologies. We have shown previously that the velocity of the fundamental antisymmetric (or flexural) guided wave, measured for bone phantoms and bones in vitro, correlates with the cortical thickness significantly better than those by other axial ultrasound methods. Recent studies give support for a connection between the presence of inorganic particles (of microm and nm size) in different organs and tissues and the development of inflammatory foci, called granulomas. Ion-Selective Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Ion-selective organic electrochemical transistors with sensitivity to potassium approaching 50 μA dec(-1) are demonstrated. The remarkable sensitivity arises from the use of high transconductance devices, where the conducting polymer is in direct contact with a reference gel electrolyte and integrated with an ion-selective membrane.

Plasticizer extraction of Taxol infusion solution from various infusion devices.

Taxol solution extracts the plasticizer DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. In order to minimize patient exposure to DEHP, Taxol solutions should be prepared and administered in PVC-free materials. Particulate matter may form in Taxol infusion solution over time, so that in-line filtration with microporous membranes not greater than 0.22 microns is advisable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of various administration- and in-line filter-sets for Taxol application. An enhanced method for the determination of organic acids in several fruit juices by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with direct UV-Vis detection has been developed in this work. First, a study with simulated real juice samples was done to find the best separation conditions. Next, several commercial fruit juices were analyzed, and the organic acid contents were quantified in less than 12 min using a poly(vinyl alcohol)-coated fused-silica 'bubble cell' capillary. Abstract Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are commonly encountered in plastics stream coming from separate collections of plastic bottles. The presence of PVC in the recycled PET is very dangerous because of the chain scission provoked by the hydrogen chloride evolved from the macromolecules during degradation of PVC. Recycled PET must be free of PVC; contents of PVC as little as 100 ppm can induce degradation and discoloration of the polyester. Biological tolerance of different materials in bulk and nanoparticulate form in a rat model: sarcoma development by nanoparticles

In order to study the pathobiological impact of the nanometre-scale of materials, we evaluated the effects of five different materials as nanoparticulate biomaterials in comparison with bulk samples in contact with living tissues. Five groups out of 10 rats were implanted bilaterally for up to 12 months with materials of the same type, namely TiO 2 , SiO 2 , Ni, Co and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), subcutaneously with bulk material on one side of the vertebral column and intramuscularly with nanoparticulate material on the contralateral side. Influences of heat seal lacquer thickness on the quality of blister packages.

A sealability of aluminium lidding foils against formable polymer materials of blister packages is usually achieved by a coating of aluminium with certain grammages of heat seal lacquers. To investigate influences of their thickness on quality of blister packages, lidding foils with different grammages of two lacquer types were manufactured. Sealing experiments (variation of temperature, pressure and sealing time) were performed.
